British Portfolio Trust plc announces that on 23rd September 2002 it
re-purchased, for cancellation, 64,400 Ordinary 1p Shares (representing 0.15% of
the issued Ordinary capital), at a price of 98p per Ordinary Share.

Settlement and cancellation of the re-purchased 64,400 Ordinary Shares is due on
26th September 2002 when the issued share capital of the Trust will fall to
41,920,041 Ordinary 1p Shares.
