BARCLAYS ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM BOARD

Barclays PLC today announces that Mary Baker will be retiring as a
non-executive director of Barclays PLC with effect from 31 December 2000.

Group Chairman, Sir Peter Middleton, said: 'On behalf of the Board, I would
like to extend our warmest thanks to Mary for the significant contribution
she has made over the 13 years she has served on our main Board'.
