                       SHARE REPURCHASE
                               
Barclays PLC announces that on 12 October 1999 it purchased
for cancellation 155,969 of its ordinary shares at a price of
1873.949p per ordinary share.

Barclays has now completed its previously announced buyback
programme: some 27.7 million shares have been purchased for
cancellation, at an average price of 1798.8183p per share,
representing approximately 1.83% of the Company's issued share
capital at 31 December 1998.
