Balfour Beatty PLC 21 August 2003 BALFOUR BEATTY PLC Board Appointments Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction and services group, announces today the appointment of two new non-executive Directors with effect from 1 September 2003. Chalmers Carr, 65, is a lawyer who has been General Counsel to Coutts and Company since 1998, having previously been General Manager and Group Legal Adviser to HSBC Holdings plc for eight years. His career experience also includes senior legal and other management positions in the Central Electricity Generating Board, Bridon plc, GKN plc, Elliott Automation and Rolls Royce Ltd. Gordon Sage, 56, a chemical engineer, is Deputy Chairman of ERM Holdings Ltd, the environmental services consultancy, and a non-executive Director of Merrill Lynch World Mining Trust plc. From 1970-2001 he held a series of increasingly senior positions in Rio Tinto plc, finally as executive director responsible for its industrial minerals and diamonds businesses.
