Future Roles of Devonport and Clyde Naval Bases Clarified

Babcock welcomes today's announcement by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), again confirming the vital roles that Devonport and Clyde Naval Bases will play in supporting the Royal Navy in its current and future operational requirements.

As a strategic partner and key support provider to the Royal Navy in many critical areas, we are totally committed to working with them to improve efficiency, reduce infrastructure cost and increase the service availability of the submarine and surface ship fleets.

The Babcock operations in Devonport, Clyde, Rosyth and Bristol play key roles in support of the existing Royal Navy fleet of submarines and ships. We are also making major contributions to the development of new naval platforms including the Queen Elizabeth class Aircraft Carriers, the Future Surface Combatant and the Future Deterrent Submarine.

Peter Rogers Chief Executive of Babcock International Group, commented:
'We look forward to working with the MoD as they seek to implement the Maritime Change Programme. We believe these long-term partnering and alliancing arrangements will ensure maximum benefits are delivered for all parties. '

Archie Bethel, Chief Executive of Babcock Marine, commented

'This confirmation of the emerging roles of the three Naval Bases is helpful in allowing us to plan for the future.  Devonport's expanded role as the main centre for providing engineering support for both submarines and surface ships will allow us to rationalise facilities and resources across Babcock Marine and make long term investments that will improve our performance and lower the cost of support to our customer.'

And commenting on the future role of the Clyde Naval base he added:

'As the base porting of the submarine fleet migrates to Faslane, we will strengthen our fleet support skills there whilst concentrating our deep engineering capabilities at Devonport to support the larger upkeep and refit packages of work.
