The issuer has made the following amendment to the 'Purchase of Own Securities'
announcement released today at 11:12 under RNS No 6474Q.

The amount of ordinary shares bought for cancellation should read '980,000
shares' and not '1,000,000 shares' as previously stated

and 

The shares in issue total should read '176,305,089' and not '176,285,089' as
previously stated.

All other details remain unchanged.

On 7 September 2000 British Empire Securities and General Trust p.l.c. bought
980,000 of its own ordinary shares for cancellation at a price of 174.75p
each.  There are 176,305,089 ordinary shares in issue following this purchase.
