British Empire Sec & Gen Tst PLC 17 October 2006 BRITISH EMPIRE SECURITIES AND GENERAL TRUST PLC Performance Commentary This investment management report relates to performance figures as at 30 September 2006. Over the month NAV was up 1.2%1. This compares to an increase in the benchmark of 2.3%2, and an increase of 1.4%1 and 3.1%1 for the FTSE All Share and the MSCI World (£) indices respectively. Financial year to date, net asset value rose 13.5%1 compared to a rise of 12.6%2 for the Datastream index, 8.7%1 for the MSCI World (£) and 14.7%1 for the FTSE All Share. Over three years NAV is up 103.7%1 while the FTSE All Share is up 65.7%1. Manager's Comment The NAV finished the financial year up 13.5%, which is just ahead of our benchmark index. Following, as it does, three very strong years in the markets, we still have concerns over the valuations on offer. We have, therefore, held significant liquidity throughout the year. We are pleased that we have been able to out perform the benchmark despite our more conservative liquidity stance.
