Re EU Sugar Quota Cuts

                             EU Sugar Quota Cuts                              

Associated British Foods' subsidiary, British Sugar plc, today released the
following announcement.

As anticipated the European Commission has announced cuts to European sugar
quotas. British Sugar can confirm that the reduction in the UK beet sugar
production quota is 23,305 tonnes, 2%, to give a new maximum quota total of
1.121 million tonnes.

The quota reduction is smaller than the company expected and the net financial
effect on British Sugar is not significant. Now the details are confirmed they
will be factored into the full review of manufacturing operations which is
