Anglo American PLC 21 January 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 21 January 2002 MONDI RESPONDS TO SAICA COUNTER BID Following the announcement of a counter bid by SAICA for La Rochette, Anglo American plc announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, Mondi International (whose Offer opened on 21 January and was recommended by the Board of La Rochette on 18 January) has no comment to make at this stage. Mondi will review the full details of the counter-Offer and respond in due course. A prospectus detailing Mondi International's offer for La Rochette was published on 18 January 2002 in Les Echos and received approval no 02-035 from the COB(1).
