New Structure

Anglo American PLC 7 June 2000 TARMAC RETAINS STRONG PRESENCE IN WOLVERHAMPTON Tarmac today announced the results of its review of central functions being carried out in the two offices of Wergs Hall and Ettingshall, in the Wolverhampton area. Whilst there will, regrettably, be a loss of some 200 jobs in the short term, the company has decided to retain a strong strategic presence in Wolverhampton. Robbie Robertson, Chief Executive Officer, said: 'Following the completion of the acquisition of the company in March and its integration with Tilcon, we have spent the last three or four months looking very carefully at which functions should continue to be carried out in Wolverhampton. There will be further redundancies next year but we anticipate that a significant part of these further redundancies will be achieved through relocation and natural wastage. 'We have decided to retain a substantial presence in Wolverhampton, with key shared services being provided particularly in the fields of Finance and Information Technology and Information Services. We believe in empowerment and a decentralised structure but nonetheless see considerable benefit in providing certain services centrally for the overall group.' In addition to financial and computer functions, a number of other critical activities will be maintained, including technical, product development and marketing departments. Commenting on this Mr Robertson said: 'We have market leadership and there are very good people involved in developing new products and bringing them to the market. It is critical that we maintain this central core of excellence.' Looking to the future, Robbie Robertson said: 'Tarmac has strong roots in the West Midlands. I am sure that with this new structure Wolverhampton will continue to play a pivotal role in making the new Tarmac Group the best in the business'. Note to Editors The Tarmac Group is the market leader in the UK in aggregates, mortar, concrete blocks and asphalt, and number two in ready-mixed concrete. The group also has a number of significant markets overseas, particularly in mainland Europe. Further information: Kurt Calder at Tarmac Group Communications on 01902 382754
