        Anglo American declares Mantos Blancos offer unconditional
                                       
Anglo American plc ('AA plc') announces it has acquired an additional 11.16%
of Chilean copper producer Empresa Minera de Mantos Blancos '(Mantos Blancos')
for US$45 million (Ch$1.300 per share). Today's acquisition increases AA plc's
stake in Mantos Blancos to 88.5%.

The offer period opened on 3 April and will close on 24 April.

Notes to the Editor

Mantos Blancos has two open cast mines in northern Chile, producing
approximately 150,000 tonnes of copper per annum and has a controlling stake
in Quellaveco, a large undeveloped copper project in Peru.
