Anglo American PLC 29 August 2000 Anglo American plc sells Tarmac's US assets Anglo American plc ('AA plc') is pleased to announce the sale of Tarmac America to Titan Cement Company S.A. ('Titan') for US$636 million. This sale brings AA plc's proceeds from the disposal of non-core assets to over $1.1 billion since the start of the year. AA plc stated its intention to dispose of Tarmac's US assets with the announcement of its Offer for Tarmac on 5 November 1999, saying that AA plc had no presence in industrial minerals in the US and could not see synergistic benefits arising from the acquisition of the US assets. Tarmac America is a construction materials company and a leading supplier of aggregates, cement, concrete products and ready mixed concrete in the south eastern US. Titan produces and sells cement and building materials in Greece and abroad and is also involved in quarrying, transportation, shipping and related services. The agreed price of US$636 million for Tarmac America exceeds AA plc's initial expectations and reduces the net cost of acquiring the ongoing businesses of Tarmac to US$1.3 billion. This cost will be further reduced by the proceeds from the disposals of certain UK assets required by the Department of Trade and Industry and announced at the time of the acquisition. The disposals of the UK assets will be announced shortly. Tony Trahar, Chief Executive of AA plc said 'We are very pleased with the agreed price for Tarmac America which exceeds our initial expectations. The sale of Tarmac America brings the total sale proceeds for this year of AA plc's non core assets to over US$1.1billion'.
