                       Anglo American plc (the "Company")

Notification of Directors' Interests

1.     On the 22 September 2003 the Company was notified by representatives 
of Mr N.F. Oppenheimer, a director of the Company, that on 19 September 2003, 
CHL Investments sold 15 month call options maturing on 17 December, 2004 
and exercisable at any time up to or on that date, over 5 million Ordinary 
Shares of Anglo American plc with a strike price of £14.25.

2.     CHL Investments is ultimately controlled by trustees of trusts of 
which Mr N.F. Oppenheimer is a potential discretionary beneficiary. Mr N.F.
Oppenheimer is therefore treated as having an interest in the transaction.
