Directorate Changes

The Board of Directors of British Assets Trust plc announces that Lynn Ruddick
(aged 52) will be appointed as a non-executive Director of the Company on 1
October 2004.

She retired as a Managing Director of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in May
2004 having spent the last 12 years of her career with them. She had specific
responsibility for institutional client relationship management and latterly the
company's investment trust business.

Between 1996 and 2000 she was Deputy Chairman and, subsequently, Chairman of the
Investment Committee of the National Association of Pension Funds. She is a
Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and a member of the
Securities Institute.

There are no details requiring to be disclosed under paragraphs 6.F.2(b) to (g)
of the Listing Rules.
