                  FirstGroup plc - Transaction in Own Shares                   

FirstGroup plc ("the Company") announces that on 25 September 2009 it purchased
from J.P. Morgan Cazenove Limited 450,000 ordinary shares at an average price
of 438.8922 pence per share. The purchased shares will be held as treasury
shares.

The Company intends to hold these shares in treasury to satisfy anticipated
exercises of participants' share options in the Company's Save as You Earn
Scheme.

Following the above purchase, the Company holds 608,196 ordinary shares in
treasury and has 481,458,974 ordinary shares in issue (excluding treasury
shares).
