Fraport Traffic Figures - September 2008: Conti...

FRANKFURT, Germany, October 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) increased again during the reporting month of September 2008. Advancing by 1.2 percent to 2,465,417 metric tons, this was the second highest monthly MTOW figure recorded to date. Widebody aircraft now account for over 25 percent of FRA's total traffic volume. Because widebody jets are predominantly deployed on long-haul routes Fraport benefits over proportionately from the growth in revenue from aircraft charges and the higher consumer spend typical of intercontinental passengers. As for the other traffic results in September 2008, there was a breaking effect caused by the previous jump in kerosene costs and cooling of the world economy. This is reflected by slightly receding traffic figures. 4,834,475 passengers (3.9 percent fewer) used FRA in September 2008. Monthly airfreight throughput dropped by 5.4 percent to 170,396 metric tons. Aircraft movements slipped by 0.9 percent year-on-year to 42,119 takeoffs and landings. From January to September 2008 Frankfurt Airport welcomed a total of 41,083,538 passengers - up slightly by 0.1 percent. FRA's airfreight rose by 1.2 percent to 1,555,397 metric tons. During the same period aircraft movements dropped by 0.7 percent to 368,236 takeoffs and landings. Due to the elimination of FRA's overnight domestic mail hub, airmail volume fell as expected by 3.2 percent to 65,885 metric tons. Combined, the Fraport Group's six majority-owned airports recorded a 1.9 percent jump in traffic to 61,024,622 passengers for the January-to-September 2008 period. Particularly strong passenger development was achieved by Peru's Lima Airport (LIM), up 11.8 percent growth, and Turkey's Antalya Airport (AYT), up 8.4 percent. In contrast, Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) airports on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast registered less than expected passenger traffic (minus 0.7 percent and minus 3.5 percent, respectively). The Group's cargo throughput (airfreight plus airmail) surged by 2.9 percent to 1,871,441 metric tons, while aircraft movements climbed by 2.1 percent to 556,640 takeoffs and landings. In the cargo category, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) achieved growth of 22.7 percent or 93.758 metric tons in the first nine months of the year. Since the start of the summer timetable, passenger traffic at this low-cost airport has developed positively again - rising 3.4 percent alone in September 2008. However, this could not fully compensate for the slide in passenger traffic during the first four months of the year. Thus, at the end of the third quarter (first nine months of 2008) HHN recorded 3,057,534 passengers and a decline of 2.5 percent. Because of the developments around the world in recent weeks, Fraport expects Frankfurt Airport's passenger traffic growth rate for full-year 2008 to be between zero and one percent at the most.
