Base metals bounced firmly off their June lows, with copper rising back above the US$3/lb to a close of US$3.30/lb, its highest level since early May. Of note was the drawdown in LME metal inventories during the month. Gold prices slipped back below the US$1,200/oz level as investors took profits. In the energy sector, oil prices moved higher to close at US$79/Bbl. BP remains on course to "kill" the leaking Macondo well in early August.
