    LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 2003--

Tate & Lyle PLC was informed on 1 April 2003 by the Manager of the
Tate & Lyle PLC Corporate Personal Equity Plans ('PEPs') that on 31
March 2003 purchases of Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were made at a
price of 296 pence per share for the three Executive Directors of Tate
& Lyle PLC detailed below.

i)     110 Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were bought for PEPs owned by
       Mr S Gifford who now has an interest in 160,833 Ordinary shares
       in Tate & Lyle PLC.

ii)      58 Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were bought for PEPs owned by
       Mr S Strathdee who now has an interest in 31,398 Ordinary
shares in Tate & Lyle PLC.

iii)     71 Tate & Lyle Ordinary shares were bought for PEPs owned by
       Mr J H W Walker who now has an interest in 25,508 Ordinary
shares in Tate & Lyle PLC.
