Tottenham Hotspur PLC 11 April 2002 Date: 11 April 2002 Enquiries: Trevor Phillips, Holborn Tel: 020 7929 5599 Tottenham Hotspur plc ('Tottenham Hotspur') Thomson becomes first holiday company to sponsor a Premiership football team Tottenham Hotspur has signed a multi-million pound contract with Britain's leading holiday company, Thomson. The two-year agreement commences 1st July 2002, and will see Thomson as the football club's major sponsor, with its new re-branded 'smile' logo featured on the club's shirts for the new 2002-03 season. This is the first time a holiday company has sponsored a Premiership football team. With more women and children watching football than ever before, Thomson sees the move as an opportunity to establish its new brand identity to a core family market. Daniel Levy, chairman, Tottenham Hotspur plc, commented, 'This deal is very significant for Tottenham Hotspur. It is one that will benefit the club, Thomson and, importantly, our fans. The new deal will not only mean a strong financial investment into the club, but also exclusive offers for Tottenham fans from Thomson's vast range of holidays. I look forward to a very successful relationship with Thomson.' Chris Mottershead, managing director, TUI UK, said: 'With more women and children watching and playing football, our own research shows that it's a sport close to the hearts of our customers. Nearly every family in Britain has at least one mad-keen football supporter in it and, as the fastest growing sport for women and girls, we believe this offers a real opportunity. We've been considering various sponsorship opportunities as part of our marketing strategy for some time and, given the vast media audience, we believe Premiership football is a perfect opportunity to establish our new brand identity alongside one of the most prestigious brands in football.' He added: 'This deal is more than just a logo on shirts and we'll see a variety of collaborative activities between the company and the Club. Tottenham Hotspur is a glamorous and fashionable club with an impressive new management team and we'll be looking to maximise the partnership over the next two years.' The Tottenham Hotspur partnership will broaden the reach of Thomson's marketing with a wide range of activities planned for Thomson customers, staff and industry partners. -ENDS- Notes to Editors - About Thomson Thomson Holidays is now in its 28th consecutive year as the number one holiday brand and currently sells some four million holidays each year.
