GreenSpur Wind - Design Services Contract

Summary by AI BETAClose X

Time To ACT plc announced that its subsidiary, GreenSpur Wind Limited, has secured a design services contract with Severn Estuary Tidal Bar Ltd (SETB) to assess the application of GreenSpur's axial-flux generator technology for SETB's Very Low Head tidal turbine systems. This feasibility and design study, expected to conclude in January 2026, represents a strategic expansion for GreenSpur into the tidal generator market, a sector with significant potential, estimated to require thousands of generator units across the UK long-term. The contract could lead to a licensing agreement if technical and commercial outcomes are successful, aligning with GreenSpur's licensing-led commercial model and its existing focus on the wind sector.

GreenSpur Wind Limited - Design Services contract

Time To ACT plc (AQSE: TTA), an engineering-led group focused on technology for the energy transition supply chain, is pleased to announce that its subsidiary, GreenSpur Wind Limited ("GreenSpur"), has entered into a design services contract with Severn Estuary Tidal Bar Ltd ("SETB"), a company developing next-generation Very Low Head ("VLH") tidal turbine systems.

VLH technology refers to turbines designed to operate efficiently at very low water-level differences, typically between 0.5 and 4 metres of head. This enables power generation using reduced civil engineering requirements, low rotational speeds and lower environmental impact, creating opportunities for modular, scalable tidal-range solutions.

Under this initial contract, GreenSpur will undertake a feasibility and design study assessing the application of GreenSpur's axial-flux generator technology for use as a submerged "wet" generator within SETB's VLH turbine concept. The generator systems under consideration are expected to be megawatt-scale, aimed at contributing to the unlocking of the multi-billion-pound tidal-range industry through compact, scalable and cost-effective generation systems.

The feasibility and design study is expected to be completed during January 2026, aligning with SETB's development programme.

This engagement represents a strategic expansion of GreenSpur's technology platform. While the Company's principal development pathway and commercial focus remain firmly on the multi-megawatt wind sector, many of GreenSpur's foundational patent families, design methodologies and materials technologies were conceived with marine and tidal operating conditions in mind. As such, the tidal generator market represents a highly compatible additional opportunity to the wind sector, and consistent with GreenSpur's long-term technology and licensing strategy.

Independent analysis published in the March 2025 Severn Estuary Commission Report concludes that tidal-range schemes in the Severn Estuary are technically feasible and could contribute between 7 and 21 TWh of predictable, low-carbon electricity annually, equivalent to 2.3 to 7 percent of current UK electricity demand. The Report also notes that the UK National Energy System Operator anticipates a requirement for 3 to 5 GW of tidal-range capacity by 2050.

When viewed alongside the wider context provided in the UK Government's guidance ("Wave and Tidal Energy: Part of the UK's Energy Mix"), and supported by recent industry analysis including the British Hydropower Association's 2023 position paper which identifies up to 20 GW of UK tidal-range potential and ~30 TWh/year of output, SETB believes that this represents a significant long-term addressable opportunity for megawatt-scale VLHead generation systems.

If expressed in notional turbine units, using typical multi-megawatt turbine classes, these published estimates translate to an indicative market of several thousand generator units across the UK over the long term.

Subject to successful technical and commercial outcomes from the preliminary design contract, both parties anticipate progressing discussions regarding a licensing agreement for the use of GreenSpur's intellectual property and know-how in the marine sector.

GreenSpur's axial-flux generator platform has been developed over more than a decade and is protected by a growing international patent portfolio covering generator architecture, magnetic configurations, materials systems and scalable manufacturing methods. The Company's licensing-led commercial model is designed to enable collaboration across multiple renewable sectors.

Jason Moody, COO of Time To ACT plc and Chairman of GreenSpur Wind Ltd, commented:

"We are very excited to begin this work with SETB. Their approach to Very Low Head tidal systems presents a compelling opportunity to apply our axial-flux technology in a sector that is highly aligned with our strengths. This design study is an important first step, and if successful, will open the door to a meaningful licensing relationship. SETB is an ideal partner for bringing this type of innovation forward."

About Time To ACT plc

Time To ACT plc is an engineering-led group focused on technology for the energy transition supply chain. It currently has two principal operating businesses: Diffusion Alloys and GreenSpur. As the parent company of the Group, Time To ACT provides strategic and operational support to the operating companies and capital to enable their growth.

About Diffusion Alloys

Diffusion Alloys supplies diffusion coatings. A diffusion coating is an intermetallic layer that protects metal components from degradation at high temperatures and in highly corrosive environments, such as those found in hydrogen and nuclear energy generation.

Diffusion Alloys has joined forces with Johnson Matthey plc, the market leaders in synthesis gas ("syngas") with a significant pipeline of Blue Hydrogen projects, to scale-up production and address the increasing demand for low carbon hydrogen used to reduce global carbon emissions.

In addition to working for numerous historic and existing customers, the Directors believe that Diffusion Alloys is the only credible diffusion coater in the world for blue hydrogen components, has already been coating in volume for a leading European vendor in the green hydrogen space and is also in pre-commercial discussions with new cleantech equipment manufacturers.

Diffusion Alloys has two distinct areas of focus:

·    Coating Technology: Selling technical excellence in coating capability supported by the concept of "flexible capacity" - the ability to provide customers with capacity wherever they need it, whether for the coating of Large Parts or Small Parts.

·    Coating Services: Plant-led coatings business centred on its Middlesbrough site.

About GreenSpur

GreenSpur is an intellectual property creator and generator designer that has developed a credible solution for renewable energy applications to the Rare Earth magnet problem.

Magnets constructed using Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are fundamental components in electrical generators and electric vehicle motors which are critical to delivering the clean energy transition. However, there are substantial supply chain constraints and risks in the sourcing of REEs that are needed for these magnets.

GreenSpur's generator design eliminates the need for Rare Earth magnets and copper coils without any loss in electrical performance.
