                          Purchase of Own Securities



At the Annual General Meeting of the Company held on 4 September 2001,
Shareholders granted the Company authority to purchase up to 43,080,000
ordinary shares.

The Company announces that it has on 7 January 2002 purchased 250,000 of the
Company's ordinary shares at 7.625p per share. On cancellation of these shares
the Company's issued share capital will be 284,962,760 ordinary shares.
