Appointment of Director

APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR

Spectris plc is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Anthony Reading as a
Non-Executive Director with effect from 10 March 2004.

For the last 11 years Mr Reading was a director of Tomkins plc and Chairman of
Tomkins Corporation until he retired at the end of 2003. Prior to joining
Tomkins he held senior positions with a number of international companies
including Group Chief Executive of the manufacturing and engineering division
of BTR plc.
