                      SOUTH AFRICAN BREWERIES plc APPOINTS
                           DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

London, 15 March 2001.  South African Breweries plc (LSE : SAB)
(, one of the worlds largest brewing groups, announces the
appointment of Nick Chaloner as Director of Communications.  The appointment
took effect from 1 March 2001.

Chaloner assumes overall responsibility for SAB plc's public, media and
investor communications functions.  He will be based in London, reports to SAB
plc Group Chief Executive, Graham Mackay and sits on the company's Executive

'The appointment of a senior communications professional will help leverage
the strong corporate image we enjoy in South Africa into other markets', said
Graham Mackay, Group CEO of SAB plc.  'Nick has considerable communications
expertise, gained over many years in both agency and in-house roles.  We are
confident he will make a real difference to our global communications

Chaloner's career has included three years as Director of Corporate Affairs at
Abbey National and nine years with international public relations consultancy
Hill & Knowlton, where he was an Executive Vice President.  While at Abbey
National he built and ran an award winning corporate communications function
in one of the UK's largest banking groups.  During his consultancy career he
led the Athens 2004 Olympic bid communications campaign, launched Pizza Hut in
Moscow and counselled major corporations such as BP, Nestle, DHL, 3i and Pepsi
Co amongst others.
