                 SOUTH AFRICAN BREWERIES plc
                     MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT

Graham Mackay, Chief Executive of South African Breweries
plc ('SAB'), has announced the following senior executive
appointments, all of which take effect from 1 October 2000:
Pete Lloyd, currently Managing Director of SAB Europe, will
be moving to the United Kingdom to take up a newly created
position, head of Organisational Development, and will drive
and coordinate the many aspects in the completion of SAB's
move to a focused and integrated beverage business. This
position includes particular responsibility for the
establishment of strategic manpower planning and systems, as
well as brand custodianship.

Mr Lloyd will remain responsible for Pilsner Urquell
International, run by Mark Luce, and SAB's import operations
in the USA, headed by Barry Smith, previously Managing
Director of SAB Poland.

Mike Simms, currently chairman of Other Beverage Interests
in South Africa, will succeed Pete Lloyd as Managing
Director of SAB Europe. Mr Simms spent 12 years in SAB's
South African beer operations, before he took over the
responsibility for the group's Other Beverages, both in
South Africa and internationally.

Dr Alan Clark, currently Marketing Director of Beer South
Africa, will take up the position of Chief Executive of
SAB's Soft Drinks Division, with responsibility for
Amalgamated Beverage Industries Limited (ABI) and
Appletiser. Following the restructuring and other
rationalisation in Other Beverage Interests, the division
will be renamed as SAB's 'Soft Drinks Division'. Dr Clark
will join the SAB plc Executive Committee and report
directly to Graham Mackay

It is intended that Alan Clark will also lead ABI as chief
executive, with clearance from the ABI Board. In this
capacity, he succeeds Trent Odgers, who will be taking over
as Managing Director of SAB Poland from Barry Smith.

Barry Smith has been appointed President and CEO of a new
company, SAB USA Inc, responsible for overseeing all of
SAB's interests in the USA and will be based in New Jersey.

The new Marketing Director for Beer SA will be announced in
due course.

Norman Adami will succeed Graham Mackay as Chairman of the
board of The South African Breweries Ltd, and will continue
to serve as its executive head. Mr Mackay will take over
the chairmanship of ABI.

Pete Lloyd, Mike Simms and Norman Adami all remain on the
board of South African Breweries plc, and will continue to
serve as members of the Executive Committee.

'These appointments in the SAB plc executive team underwrite
SAB's commitment to strengthen its stronghold in the markets
it has entered and reflects the versatility and flexibility
of the SAB management team to serve the group in different
capacities', said Graham Mackay.
