Fire Damage at Mexican Plant

Volex Group PLC 27 September 2004 EMBARGOED UNTIL 7.00 a.m. MONDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2004 VOLEX GROUP p.l.c FIRE DAMAGE AT MEXICAN PLANT Volex Group p.l.c. reports that a fire affected its manufacturing operations in Tijuana, Mexico on September 17th, 2004. None of our employees were hurt in the incident. The fire started in an adjacent non-Volex business unit and damage was contained to one of our two physically separate buildings. That building has been severely damaged with 22 of 60 manufacturing cells in Tijuana as a whole having been affected. The remaining 38 cells continue to operate normally. The Tijuana sites together produce somewhat less than 10% of the group's sales. A full recovery plan is already in place involving the utilisation of our other North American, European and Asian manufacturing capabilities. We are working with our customers to ensure the rapid replacement of product specific tooling and inventory to minimise the impact on deliveries. The company will suffer some reduction in sales and increased costs during the implementation of this recovery plan. The quantification of these impacts is being assessed and at the same time we are establishing the extent to which these amounts will be covered by our insurance policies. Volex will inform the market when further definitive information is available and in any event will provide a detailed update at the time of the announcement of our interim results early in November 2004.
