Re Contract

Screen PLC 2 April 2001 2 April 2001 SCREEN PLC: CONTRACT GAIN Lancashire Police first to order integrated Automatic Number Plate Recognition System Screen Plc ('Screen'), the provider of advanced security and communications systems, announces that its subsidiary, Petards Mobile Intelligence ('PMI'), has secured its first order from the Lancashire Police for its new integrated Automatic Number Plate Recognition system ('ANPR'). The new product, ANPR, combines Screen's existing ProVida in-car video system with its mobile data system, allowing police to recognise and scan number plates in a fraction of a second. ANPR automatically checks vehicle number plates against its own on-board database, alerting officers to 'wanted' vehicles. Lancashire Police is the first UK police force to order the ANPR system, which is now being marketed to police forces in the UK and throughout Screen's international network in 37 other countries. Almost every UK police force uses the ProVida in-car video. Inspector Peter Stas of Lancashire Police, Motorway Unit, said: 'The mobile ANPR system demonstrates how technology can assist road policing officers to detect and arrest those who commit crime.' Owen Williams, Chairman of Screen, said: 'We expect additional contracts for our ANPR system to follow in quick succession, particularly after strong interest expressed at recent demonstrations to police forces in the UK and across Europe. ANPR gives police forces an essential advantage in their battle to stop car-crime, reduce traffic offences and make our roads safer. We expect this product to be very popular.'
