Both companies will launch sales and marketing initiatives to promote BellSouth FastAccess and DSL-enabled computer systems. The offering will include a pre-installed DSL modem and pre-loaded software to support a connection to BellSouth FastAccess Internet Service and enable DSL high-speed Internet access service on a qualified telephone line. This joint offer is expected to be available sometime in the second quarter of this year. 'There are natural synergies between the computer system and DSL industries,' said Ralph delaVega, President of broadband services for BellSouth. 'BellSouth and Dell are taking advantage of a unique opportunity to join our respective technologies to make the customer's broadband experience simpler and more convenient. Through this alliance, we essentially are streamlining the modem installation and service registration process for our customers by offering a one-device, plug-and-play broadband solution,' delaVega said. The alliance with Dell will provide BellSouth customers more convenient availability of DSL service, enabling them to fully enjoy rapid access to the Internet, virtually instantaneous downloads, streaming video and audio, and online interactive games. 'Consumers and businesses increasingly are buying computers specifically to go online, and this agreement will make it easier for BellSouth customers to get to the Internet within minutes of setting up their new Dell computer,' said John Hamlin, vice president and general manager of Dell's U.S. Consumer business. The alliance includes other projects planned by the two companies. Dell will become a provider of computer systems for commercial use to BellSouth, as well as provide Dell servers to BellSouth.
