Euston Station Appointment

British Land Co PLC 14 April 2008 AWARD WINNING ARCHITECTS APPOINTED FOR EUSTON STATION REDEVELOPMENT British Land and Network Rail, joint partners for the proposed £1 billion redevelopment and regeneration of Euston Station, have appointed two award winning architect practices to take forward the design. Allies and Morrison has been appointed Masterplan Architect to create a highly sustainable, integrated, mixed use scheme for the 15 acre site. An essential part of the brief is to develop a scheme which acts as a regeneration catalyst for both the major transport interchange and the wider Euston area. Foreign Office Architects has been appointed for the wholesale redevelopment of the station which last saw major investment in the 1960s. The team will consult with rail operators and station users and seek to create a 21st Century facility which increases capacity to match future demand and meets the growing needs and expectations of the travelling public. The practice will work closely with Allies and Morrison on the integration of the station design within the masterplan. Development over and around the station will produce a mixed use scheme of more that 3 million sq. ft of residential, commercial, retail and other uses. Since being selected as preferred bidder, British Land has been working with Network Rail to create a brief for the station and wider development, whilst engaging in initial stakeholder consultation. The aim is to submit a planning application by early 2010 and, subject to planning permission, work could start in 2011. Nigel Webb, Head of Development at British Land, said: "We are excited to be entering the next phase for the regeneration of Euston with this inspirational design team. Foreign Office Architects and Allies and Morrison have the combination of creative flair, experience and rigour to take forward a 21st century design for Euston Station and the surrounding area. They will build on the work carried out by architect Larry Oltmanns on the conceptual designs for the project and the on-going stakeholder consultation process." Larry Oltmanns was a part of the team who worked with British Land on the original competition for the site. He has continued working on the scheme since founding V3 Architects and Urban Designers last May and will continue in an advisory role. Mick Martin, Director of Commercial Property at Network Rail, said: "These appointments are evidence of major progress in our plans to transform Euston into a station the 70 million people who use it every year rightly expect and deserve. It is a further step forward in our plans to deliver successful and profitable developments which deliver real improvements to stations and facilities for surrounding communities." Notes to Editors About Allies and Morrison: Masterplanning is a major part of Allies and Morrison's practice much of which is based around transport projects which include the redevelopment of King's Cross St Pancras Underground station, the Tottenham Hale interchange and feasibility studies for the Crossrail project.
