                           CHAIRMAN'S AGM STATEMENT                            

Demand for our companies' products has been relatively stable and slightly
ahead of the same period last year. Experience is uneven across our user
industries and geographical markets, while there are some signs that confidence
may be returning in the US. Technology markets have yet to see a recovery, but
further deterioration seems unlikely.

Looking forward, the different factors acting as a drag on global economic
activity look set to remain. However, given the fundamental strengths of the
company, the expectations expressed in March remain valid. Consequently we
anticipate that the company will make progress in the year as a whole.

As previously announced, Dr Peter Watson retires from the Board today. Andrew
Given assumes the role of Senior Independent Director.
